Internal Linking Strategy: The Underrated SEO Tactic for 2025

Internal links are the most controllable ranking factor you have. Here's how to build a linking structure that spreads authority and pushes your key pages up the SERPs.

Backlinks get all the attention, but internal links are the ranking factor you fully control — no outreach, no waiting, no risk. A deliberate internal linking structure spreads authority across your site and tells Google which pages matter most. It is one of the highest-leverage, lowest-effort SEO moves available, and most sites do it poorly.

What Internal Links Do for SEO

Internal links serve three jobs: they help Google discover and crawl your pages, they pass authority (link equity) between pages, and they signal topical relationships. A page with many relevant internal links pointing to it reads as important — and Google ranks it accordingly.

Point Links at Your Money Pages

Authority flows through links. We identify the pages that matter most for the business — key service pages, high-intent content, conversion pages — and deliberately funnel internal links toward them from relevant, high-traffic pages. This concentrates ranking power where it produces revenue.

Build Topic Clusters, Not Random Links

The most effective structure is the pillar-and-cluster model:

  • ·A comprehensive pillar page targets a broad core topic
  • ·Supporting articles target specific long-tail sub-topics
  • ·Every supporting article links up to the pillar, and the pillar links down to each

This creates a tight web that establishes topical authority and lifts the whole cluster.

Use Descriptive Anchor Text

Anchor text — the clickable words in a link — tells Google what the target page is about. Generic anchors like click here or read more waste the signal. We use descriptive, keyword-relevant anchor text that accurately describes the destination, without over-optimizing to the point of looking spammy.

Fix Orphan Pages and Dead Ends

Orphan pages — pages with no internal links pointing to them — are hard for Google to find and rank. We audit for orphans and ensure every important page is linked from somewhere relevant. Likewise, every page should link out to related content so users and crawlers keep moving.

Mind Crawl Depth

Pages buried many clicks from the homepage get crawled less and rank worse. We keep important pages within a few clicks of the homepage through smart navigation and contextual linking, so authority reaches them and Google crawls them frequently.

Make It a Habit, Not a Project

The best internal linking is continuous: every new article links to relevant existing pages, and existing pages get updated to link to important new content. Done consistently, this compounds into a powerful, self-reinforcing structure over time.
